With the Canadian borders opening gradually, some category of workers can now apply for a work permit at the Port of Entry (POE).
Workers can apply if they:
- are fully vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved in Canada;
- have a valid job offer in Canada when applying for an employer-specific work permit or if not fully vaccinated;
- will not be working as a live-in caregiver or as a seasonal agricultural worker;
- do not need to get a temporary resident visa to work in Canada or have a positive LMIA; or are a national or permanent resident of the U.S., Greenland or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
Documents needed at the POE:
All applicants:
- passport or other travel document
- proof that the medical certificate is valid, if one is needed
Applicants applying for an employer-specific work permit via LMIA
- the job offer letter;
- a copy of the approved LMIA with the worker's name;
- the LMIA number;
- proof that the qualifications and experience for the job are met; and
- a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ), for those who want to work in Quebec.
Applicants applying for an employer-specific work permit without LMIA
- the job offer letter;
- the offer of employment number from the employer in Canada;
- proof that an LMIA for the job is not needed
- proof that the qualifications and experience for the job are met
Applicants applying for an open work permit
- the job offer letter, if not fully vaccinated.
Travelers who do not qualify as fully vaccinated will need to follow COVID-19 testing and quarantine requirements.
